This week Kelly and JJ continue with their Crafting Characters series with RELATIONSHIPS. If a tree falls in the middle of a wood and no one hears it, does it make a sound? If a character is fully realized but has no other characters to witness it, are they truly three-dimensional?

Show Notes

  • Relationships between characters also have dynamics: tense, easy, etc.

  • Relationships, like characters, also evolve and change.

  • How characters relate to other characters is revealing because people don't relate to everyone in the exact same way.

  • Great relationships are characterized by potential—the potential for friendship or romance or some other way of connecting.

    • Creating potential between characters come from interactions, but also the choices they make either in opposition or in conjunction with each other.

What We're Working On

  • Kelly is almost caught up on all her reading and queries from 2017!

  • JJ is in the middle of a manic phase and unable to focus or concentrate on anything.

What You're Asking

Would you guys rather fight 10 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck? (Assume all are trying to eat your soul.) —Rebecca Mix

Both Kelly and JJ say 10 duck-sized horses.

In times here you find yourself stressed/hopeless/in a bad spell, is there a quote or an activity or a thing that helps bring you peace/comfort & helps you remember you’re going to make it through? —Rebecca Mix

Both Kelly and JJ retreat into comfort reads. When JJ is manic, small, repetitive activities often help: simple games, cleaning, knitting, etc.

What You're Saying

★★★★★ The absolute best! —Eheheheh!

This podcast is my favorite podcast. I've listened to every single episode, and I feel almost as excited to hear a new episode as I imagine Kelly does when she sees there's a new review. The combined knowledge from their experiences give a unique insight to what it's like working in the publishing industry, and make this podcast a must-listen. Both ladies are brutally honest, and do not shy away from more difficult topics. From writing/story 101 guides on tropes and archetypes, or breaking down contracts, or how to deal with becoming a public figure as an author, the pub crawl podcast has it all. Kelly and JJ are incredibly charming, and every time I listen to a new podcast, it feels like catching up with friends—friends that are far more knowledgeable than I. The sound quality is also pretty solid most of the time, with only a few minor exceptions from technological hiccups. I have learned so much, and am grateful that this is a resource I can come back to...and I've also gotten plenty of fantastic media recommendations through this show, whether books or otherwise. Thank you, ladies. You're both the best.

Thank you so much! It might be difficult to actually match Kelly's level of excitement when she sees a new review, but we're glad you come close!
